The most recent school works programme in SMGS was completed early at 5 a.m. on Thursday morning. The works can be broken down into three individual projects.
Access
Following a consultation with the Dept. of Education, the Board of Management was advised to secure the borders of the school. This work can be seen in the new doors (both internally and externally) with fob access and the new railings with keycode access near the House of Retreat. The school is now a safer and more secure space for all who attend.
Additional Accommodation
Due to the growing nature of pupil numbers in the school and additional staff – it was agreed that the cabins on yard were no longer fit for purpose. Indeed, they had been in place since 2007. Two larger spaced units were delivered at 5 a.m. on Thursday morning, containing five additional rooms for SET.
Solar Panels
The Dept. of Education & the Dept. of the Environment, Climate and Communications collaborated on a new initiative to install 6KWh of solar panels (15 panels) on all schools in the country on a phased basis. The Board of Management, having researched the electricity consumption of the school, decided to purchase an extra 21 panels to produce a total of 14KWh. In order to meet the cost – local businesses were invited to sponsor a panel. We now produce 90KWh of energy on the highest yielding days – enough to cover the running consumption of the school. Thanks kindly to all who sponsored locally – if you are speaking to any of our local sponsors please thank them for their support of our school.
